The Fear of Getting Older

getting older5

Why is it we fear getting older? Of course it is the obvious inevitable physical changes we all go through, that can be a little unsettling. Things do start to droop, wrinkle and expand. And sometimes you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and wonder who the heck that middle-aged person is. Some of us on the outside may look grown-up, but on the inside we feel like we are still in our 30’s or younger. Which, I think is a good thing, because you truly are as old as you feel. Ask 71 year old Patty Labelle, who is currently dating a 41 year old. Now, if that’s not being comfortable in your skin, then what is?  We spend a fortune on face creams, plastic surgery, injections to various parts of our bodies, hair growth formulas, and Botox, but eventually you realize you are fighting an uphill battle. We just need to manage aging instead of trying to fight it. Keeping up our appearance and trying to eat healthier and exercise can help a lot. But we should also accept the beauty of aging. In all honestly, a striking mature man or woman is much more attractive than someone who looks pulled too tight, too tanned, too muscular or overly top-heavy.

Remember when you were in your 30’s you seem to be defined by how much busyness you had going on? You had to make money to pay for the lifestyle you wanted to project onto society. Your kids needed to be raised right or God forbid, they may embarrass you by becoming a menace to society or end up living in a trailer park or worse, a box under some bridge. And although those years seemed fulfilling and wonderful at the time, they also filled you with angst. What about those things that didn’t matter to you as a child; such as having the right cocktail napkins or winning lawn of the month, somehow mattered so very much in your 30’s. We are constantly struggling toward some kind of perfection and achievement that is “out there” somewhere. Most of you spend your time trying to create the self you thought you should be. Trying to piece together the perfect you made from pieces of this and that. The clothes you wear, the neighborhood you live in, the car you drive and the type of friends you have. It may look pretty nice from the outside, but does the inside match the outside? Sometimes we can spend way too much time on crafting ourselves, and too little time just being ourselves. When you spend so much time spinning your wheels to maintain the beautifully crafted life, you miss out on a whole lot of real living. So, what does it feel like to be older? Well, it sure doesn’t feel like the age you imagined when you are in your 20’s or 30’s. It actually feels the way you feel right now, a lot smarter, more confident, and whole lot wiser. Most of us are living longer, so you have more time and a lot more resources to enjoy life. So don’t fear getting older, look at as a privilege many won’t get to experience and look forward to it. Just ENJOY IT!
