Building Your Confidence

Have you ever wanted to do something so badly that you can actually see yourself doing what it is that you desire? That’s how bad I wanted to write for a magazine. I felt if I could write for a magazine it would be proof that I had the ability to do what I love, which is write. Although, writing is all I think about all day, every day I had allowed fear of rejection to stunt my confidence, which prohibited me from submitting my samples to various magazines. Until one day after my usual stalking of various magazines to see who was accepting applications for writers, I stumbled upon TDWR Magazine who was looking for new writers for their inspirational online magazine and I decided to go for it. I submitted samples to the editor and was hired to be one of their Lifestyle writers. In the beginning none of the writers were paid to write, but that didn’t matter to me because what I received was the confidence I needed to be able to handle my assignments on time, became part of a great writing community, made cover story in their print magazine (twice) and eventually got paid to do what I love.
If I had not put my fear of rejection aside and taken that first step by submitting my samples I would not have gained the great experience or the confidence back that I had allowed to get lost within. And although after a few years the editor decided to shut down the magazine to pursue her other dreams, I am forever grateful to her for allowing me the opportunity.
If there is something you want to pursue, but are letting fear hold you back, just know that you will never feel as confident as you want to feel. Stop believing that you should feel more confident before you take the next step. Taking the next step is what builds your confidence.
