I Have Too Many Obligations
I hope you all had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. I don’t know about you, but for me it seems each year I allow the holidays to sneak up on me. I enjoy giving gifts, especially at Christmas time. And each year I make the same statement to myself that I will start my Christmas shopping in the spring and summer and never do. It doesn’t hit me that we are near the holiday season until fall appears and is almost over. I truly must do better. I enjoy shopping for others and seeing their expressions, but I don’t enjoy feeling obligated to do anything that I do for anyone. When I do something for someone I do it because I want to not because I have to.
I have a friend who is always sending me little gifts in the mail and every time I get a package I get so excited. But also each time she did so I would get the feeling that I then have to send her something. Luckily, she is a true friend and when I explained to her how I felt when I didn’t send her something, she told me I should never feel that way, which was a great feeling of relief. Because to be honest, there are times I am not able to send her something at that time. I am so grateful she understands that, for it takes a lot of weight off of me. And now when we send each other something we know it is from the heart and not out of obligation.
I say all this because we all have obligations, but the reality is some people will be disappointed no matter what you do. This is why you should always check in with yourself first. The more you say “no” to things that don’t matter to you, the easier it is to say “yes” to things that do. You’re not a bad person if you let some people down, so show yourself some love if you feel as though you are. We can’t do everything for everyone in every situation. Do what you can when you can and when it aligns with your values and be sure to do it with a cheerful heart.
